Employing a global reckoning system, Professor Thomas embarked on a meticulous journey through the cosmic labyrinth to unravel the enigma surrounding the onset of Ramadan 1445 Hijriah. "At the moment of Maghrib on the 10th of March 2024, in the Southeast Asian region, the moon's position did not meet the new criteria set forth by MABIMS and the Odeh criteria. Thus, the commencement of Ramadan 1445 falls on the following day, the 12th of March 2024," elucidated Thomas, as cited from his personal blog on Monday, the 4th of March 2024.
For the uninitiated, MABIMS represents the amalgamation of visibility criteria for the crescent moon established by the Ministries of Religious Affairs of Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, and Singapore.
However, he underscored that the definitive determination of the commencement of Ramadan 2024 rests upon the decision of the religious authorities during the itsbat session, which is convened by the Ministry of Religious Affairs to ascertain the commencement of the Ramadan fast. The itsbat session also adjudicates the initiation of other significant Islamic calendar months, including Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr.
