Mrs. Hamlin's Background and Educational Journey

Mrs. Hamlin’s journey as an educator began with her pursuit of higher education, fueled by a passion for teaching and a desire to make a difference in the lives of children. After earning an Associate of Arts (AA) degree in Early Childhood Education from Merced Community College, she continued her studies at California State University, Stanislaus, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Liberal Studies and a teaching credential.

Her academic background in early childhood education provided her with a deep understanding of child development, which has been instrumental in her approach to teaching middle school students. Though she began her career teaching preschool and kindergarten, she eventually transitioned to middle school, where she discovered a new passion for working with adolescents. Teaching at HMS for 17 years, Mrs. Hamlin has worked across various subjects, including Language Arts, Social Studies, and Art, making her a versatile educator with a wide range of expertise.

Middle school education presents unique challenges and opportunities, as students navigate the complex emotional, social, and academic transitions that come with adolescence. Mrs. Hamlin’s experience across different age groups has equipped her with the skills to guide her students through this critical period, providing both academic instruction and emotional support.

The Role of AVID and Art in Mrs. Hamlin's Classroom

Mrs. Hamlin’s role at Hamlin Middle School goes beyond traditional classroom instruction; she teaches both AVID and Art, two subjects that encourage students to think creatively and critically. AVID, a college readiness program, helps students develop essential skills such as organization, time management, critical thinking, and collaboration. These skills are invaluable as students prepare for high school, college, and beyond. Mrs. Hamlin’s AVID class provides a structured framework for students to excel academically while fostering a growth mindset, empowering them to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.

Art, on the other hand, allows students to explore their creative potential and express themselves in unique ways. In Mrs. Hamlin’s art classes, students are encouraged to collaborate, experiment, and push the boundaries of their imagination. Whether working on individual projects or group assignments, students learn the importance of persistence, problem-solving, and attention to detail. Art, as Mrs. Hamlin sees it, is not just about creating beautiful works but about learning to think critically, express oneself, and appreciate the world through different perspectives.

The intersection of AVID and Art in Mrs. Hamlin’s teaching philosophy reflects her belief that education should nurture both the academic and creative sides of her students. She is passionate about helping her students develop into well-rounded individuals, capable of thinking analytically while also appreciating the beauty of creative expression.

Mrs. Hamlin’s Teaching Philosophy

Mrs. Hamlin's approach to teaching is grounded in a deep sense of responsibility to prepare her students not only for their future academic endeavors but also for life beyond the classroom. One of the key principles of Mrs. Hamlin's teaching philosophy is the importance of growth, whether through distance learning or in-person instruction. The 2020-2021 school year presented unprecedented challenges with the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing schools worldwide to adapt to new methods of teaching. However, Mrs. Hamlin embraced the shift to online learning, viewing it as an opportunity for growth for both herself and her students. Her attitude reflects a positive and adaptable mindset, showing her students that, even in the face of adversity, one can choose to grow and thrive.

In her own words, Mrs. Hamlin expresses her commitment to growth, stating, “Together we will grow either with distance learning or the classroom (the choice is up to us, I choose to grow either way!!!).” This statement encapsulates her belief that growth is a continuous process, one that can happen in any environment, as long as there is a willingness to embrace new challenges and opportunities.

Another significant aspect of Mrs. Hamlin's teaching philosophy is her emphasis on collaboration and problem-solving. Mrs. Hamlin believes that the values she holds dear in her personal life—love, support, and mutual respect—are just as important in the classroom as they are at home.
